A Prescription for Health
Simply put, Bikram Hot Yoga is a prescription for health.
In India, Yoga is prescribed to patients by Yoga Masters in much the same way a doctor in the U.S. would perscribe medication for a particular ailment. But instead of popping a few pills, Yogis prescribe certain yoga positions for certain types of maladies.
"So, you suffer from migranes?
Refining the Formula
Do poses, "A", "B", and "C" every day and see me again in six weeks."
"And you? Pain in your lower back and hips?
Poses "X", "Y", and "Z" should have you fixed up in a couple of months."
"Hmmmm... Chronic fatigue... depression?
A regimin of these particular poses will get you feeling right as rain."
Bikram Choudhury, who studied Yoga since early childhood in India, worked as a young man with his yoga master doing just this. Healing patients by prescribing yoga.
After several years of this work in India and other parts of the world, Bikram began thinking about how he could be more efficient and heal even more patients.
For years, he prescribed specific yoga poses to specific individuals for very specific ailments. Over time, he began to see common threads across patients and realized that most people were suffering from similar issues. He asked permission from his master to make a radical change in the way he prescibed yoga, and his master eventally acquiessed...
Instead of treating patients individually, Bikram knew he could heal more people in a group setting by prescribing a standard regimen. He designed a specific sequenced of yoga poses that would work the entire body and would treat 90% of what patients usually suffererd from. He was now able to treat more patients and heal more people than ever. Thus Bikram Hot Yoga was born.
The 26 poses and Two breathing exercises that make up Bikram Hot Yoga is, literally, a prescription for your health.
Done consistently, this practice can heal your body -- and mind -- from the inside out.
After all, your body knows how to heal itself. Yoga is simply the vehicle to take you there.
